When Change Becomes Noise Instead of Progress

In many organizations, change is often seen as a sign of energy, initiative, and leadership. New leaders arrive with ideas. Teams seek to innovate. Managers want to leave their mark. At first glance, this impulse appears positive.

But not all change creates value.

A common pattern can be observed across organizations. Something that is working reasonably well is replaced, redesigned, or restructured. The intention is to improve. The result, however, is often only a different version, not better.

This distinction matters more than it seems.

Entrepreneurial profiles, those who naturally drive change and innovation, tend to associate movement with progress. If something changes, it feels like an improvement. Yet this assumption can lead to unnecessary disruption. A new strategy replaces an existing one without clear evidence of added value. A new structure is introduced simply because leadership has changed. A new initiative is launched before the previous one has been fully understood or optimized.

In many cases, organizations end up investing time and energy adapting to changes that do not strengthen performance. Instead of progress, they create instability.

This dynamic is not limited to strategy or structure. It appears in everyday decisions. Marketing materials are redesigned without improving clarity or impact. Processes are replaced rather than refined. Teams shift direction without solving the underlying problem.

The core issue is a simple but critical confusion: equating "different" with "better".

For leaders, this creates an important discipline. Before introducing change, the question is not whether something can be done differently. The question is whether the change will produce a meaningful improvement.

This requires more than creativity. It requires diagnosis:

  • What is not working today?

  • What must be preserved?

  • What specifically will improve with the change?

  • What risks are introduced by changing something that already works

Without this clarity, organizations risk falling into cycles of change that consume resources without delivering results.

Effective leadership is not about constant change. It is about purposeful change. It is about knowing when to act and when to preserve what already works.

In practice, this means slowing down before acting. It means evaluating whether the motivation is to improve performance or simply to create something new. It means recognizing that stability, when it supports results, is not a weakness but an asset.

At the Adizes Institute, this principle is central to how organizations approach transformation. Change is necessary. But it must be intentional, structured, and aligned. Organizations are empowered with the tools and concepts to distinguish between change that creates value and change that only creates motion. The objective is to lead rapid change without destructive conflict, achieving sustainable, exceptional results.

Designing Structure to Support Growth: Bantotal at Adizes Headquarters

Bantotal, a leading provider of core banking technology solutions across Latin America, continues to play a key role in supporting financial institutions with integrated platforms that manage operations, transactions, and digital services. As the company grows and expands its impact, ensuring its internal structure evolves in line with its strategy becomes increasingly important.

Recently, Bantotal’s top management team, a group of 33 leaders, gathered at the Adizes Institute headquarters in Santa Barbara for a focused workshop with Dr. Ichak Adizes. The objective was clear: to review and design an organizational structure capable of sustaining growth, improving accountability, and enabling faster, more effective decision-making.

Organizational structure is not only about defining roles or reporting lines. It is about creating clarity in responsibilities, aligning authority with accountability, and ensuring that the organization can execute its strategy without friction. As companies grow, structures that once worked can become barriers, slowing down execution and creating confusion across teams.

During the workshop, the Bantotal leadership team worked through key structural principles, examining how different functions interact, where overlaps or gaps exist, and how responsibilities can be redefined to support the company’s next stage. This type of work requires more than analysis. It requires alignment among leaders with different perspectives and management styles, ensuring that decisions are not only well-designed but also fully supported and implemented.

This is at the core of what the Adizes Institute brings to organizations. For more than 50 years, the Institute has worked with companies across industries and regions to design structures that align with their lifecycle stage and strategic direction. Through the Adizes Symbergetic™Management methodology, organizations are empowered with the tools and concepts to align their teams, clarify responsibilities, and implement change rapidly without destructive conflict.

Throughout the program, participants learn how to:

  • Align teams with different management styles
  • Manage conflict constructively
  • Improve the execution of decisions
  • Lead change in complex environments

Delivered in a live online format, the program combines lectures, discussions, and collaborative work with a global group of participants, allowing each executive to apply what they learn directly to their own organization.
